The BMW i8 is a module cross-breed sports vehicle created by BMW.
The i8 is essential for BMW's electric armada "Venture I" being promoted as another sub-brand, BMW I.
The 2015 model year BMW i8 has a 7.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that delivers an all-electric range of 37 mi (60 km). The design of the BMW i8 was inspired by the BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics concept car. The BMW i8 was launched in the German market in June 2014.
The i8 is a 2+2, all-wheel drive coupé with a passenger cell made largely from carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP). Its powertrain includes a 131 hp (98 kW) electric motor mounted centrally at the rear, and a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine mounted transversely over the front axle providing power to the front wheels. Combined, the two engines generate 357 hp (266 kW) and 420 lb-ft (569 N⋅m) of torque. The petrol engine alone produces 228 hp (170 kW). The petrol engine is equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the electric motor has a two-stage transmission. The i8 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).
The i8 has fuel economy in electric mode of 2.1 L/100 km (134.5 mpg‑imp; 112.0 mpg‑US) under the NEDC test with carbon emissions of 49 g/km. When powered only by the petrol engine, the i8 has a fuel economy of 8.9 L/100 km (26.2 mpg‑imp; 21.8 mpg‑US) and emits 205g/km of carbon dioxide.
As of June 2015, the i8 ranked as the world's second best-selling plug-in hybrid car after the Volt/Ampera family of cars.
The i8 was released in the United States in August 2014.
As of December 2016, the BMW i8 had a starting price of US$142,395.
