BMW 5 Series
The BMW 5 Series is a series of mid-size luxury cars produced by the German automaker BMW since 1972. It is in its seventh generation and is the New Class's replacement. The 5 Series sits above the 3 Series in BMW's lineup and below the 7 Series in terms of price and size.
The 5 Series was originally launched in 1972 as the New Class Sedan, and was BMW's first foray into the mid-size luxury car market. The car was designed to replace the aging 3.0 CS and 3.0 CSi models, and was available in both sedan and coupe body styles. The 5 Series was initially powered by a range of inline-four and inline-six engines, but BMW later added V8 and V12 engines to the lineup.
The first generation 5 Series was succeeded by the second generation in 1981. The second generation 5 Series was available in sedan, coupe, and wagon body styles, and was powered by a range of inline-four, inline-six, and V8 engines. The third generation 5 Series was launched in 1988 and was available in sedan and wagon body styles. It was powered by a range of inline-six and V8 engines, and was the first 5 Series to be available with BMW's all-wheel drive system.
The fourth generation 5 Series was launched in 1995 and was available in sedan and wagon body styles. It was powered by a range of inline-six and V8 engines, and was the first 5 Series to be available with a diesel engine. The fifth generation 5 Series was launched in 2003 and was available in sedan and wagon body styles. It was powered by a range of inline-six and V8 engines, and was the first 5 Series to be available with a turbocharged engine.
The sixth generation 5 Series was launched in 2010 and is available in sedan and wagon body styles. It is powered by a range of inline-six and V8 engines, and is the first 5 Series to be available with a hybrid powertrain.
The seventh generation 5 Series was launched in 2017 and is available in sedan and wagon body styles. It is powered by a range of inline-six and V8 engines, and is the first 5 Series to be available with an M Performance model.
BMW has also produced a high-performance M5 model of the 5 Series since 1984. The M5 is powered by a range of inline-six and V8 engines, and is available in sedan and wagon body styles.
BMW has also produced a number of special edition models of the 5 Series, including the Alpina B5, M5 Touring, and M5 Competition.
As of 2019, over 7 million BMW 5 Series cars have been sold worldwide.
First generation (1972–1981)
The first generation 5 Series was launched in 1972 as the New Class Sedan. It was available in sedan and coupe body styles, and was powered by a range of inline-four and inline-six engines. The 5 Series was initially available with a four-speed manual transmission, but a five-speed manual was later added to the lineup.

The 5 Series was facelifted in 2007, and a new range-topping M5 model was added to the lineup. The M5 was powered by a 5.0-liter V10 engine, and was available in sedan and wagon body styles.
The fifth generation 5 Series was succeeded by the sixth generation in 2010.
Sixth generation (2010–2017)
The sixth generation 5 Series was launched in 2010 and is available in sedan and wagon body styles. It is powered by a range of inline-six and V8 engines, and is the first 5 Series to be available with a hybrid powertrain. The 5 Series was facelifted in 2014, and a new range-topping M5 model was added to the lineup. The M5 was powered by a 4.4-liter V8 engine, and was available in sedan and wagon body styles.
The sixth generation 5 Series was succeeded by the seventh generation in 2017.
Seventh generation (2017–present)
The seventh generation 5 Series was launched in 2017 and is available in sedan and wagon body styles. It is powered by a range of inline-six and V8 engines, and is the first 5 Series to be available with an M Performance model.
M models
BMW has produced a high-performance M5 model of the 5 Series since 1984. The M5 is powered by a range of inline-six and V8 engines, and is available in sedan and wagon body styles.
